I’ve never been able to comprehend commissioners-to-be that tell an artist who has opened commissions: “I can’t afford it.”
And that’s it. That’s all they have to say about it. Do they feel as though that’s a testament to the artist’s abilities, that with the finances they would hire them for an illustration? It’s that even before I started doing flats, getting a better idea on how freelancers and illustrator’s work, I always saw those kind of responses as being wastes of bandwidth to process; it’s nice that you’d like to hire them, but that doesn’t help their present case.
I have to suspect it’s from my own boorishness and, as someone told me yesterday in an unrelated discussion, “My sense of professionalism; people don’t go to you to socialize, they go because you get straight to business.”
